When designing your picture frame it is important firstly to understand what we are trying to achieve by framing our images or artwork. The process of picture framing has two primary functions; firstly a picture frame is used to protect and conserve the imagery for many years to come. Secondly a picture frame is used to enhance the appearance of an image so that when displayed it becomes lively and stands out when on display.
With regard to protecting the imagery, we make sure your images will last a long time by only using high quality conservation grade materials in the production of our picture frames. We always use acid free mounting and backing boards!
The look and feel of your finished frame will totally depend on how you wish it to appear, if you're not sure of the best framing design for your images we do offer some good advise along the way.
When using the YourFramer™ online design programme you will have a number of different choices to make, here are some general guidelines to help you get it right, and remember, when using the program if you are not sure what colour or size to use we have our 'suggestions' boxes with examples to help you out.
With over 60 different colours to choose from you should easily find the right combination for your piece. When choosing mount board colour combinations it is important not to over power the photograph or artwork, when we look at a picture frame we want to see the image not the frame first!
The first mount colour you choose is the top mount, the mount you see first. You can start by keeping this colour as being fairly neutral, choose a soft white or cream and then add some colour into the mount design by choosing a stronger colour for the double mount. If working with a triple mount you can match up the colour from the top mount as this creates a very nice effect.
Don't forget to experiment with different border widths as well as colours as it's amazing how an image can change even when just altering dimensions.
Also to help you, if you click on a mount boards description in the 'shopping cart' area you will see a window appear with some further detail on the colour and ideal use of the selected mount board.
The frame moulding must complement both image and mount board in colour and style, the size of the moulding is also important as it needs to be sturdy enough to support the contents of the frame. If framing a large mounted picture you should choose a frame with large proportions for both strength and looks.
The beauty of the YourFramer™ online program is that you can change the moulding styles often to see the different effects.
